Retief Libris Publishing
Practical books and resources for clearer, calmer living
Retief Libris Publishing creates intelligent, practical books and educational resources for people navigating the complexities of learning, leadership and life.
Founded by Australian educator, author and school leader Jacques Retief, Retief Libris Publishing is an independent publishing house, built on a simple principle: good ideas become valuable when they can be understood, applied and put to work.
Our publishing spans education, leadership, wellbeing, personal development and contemporary ideas. We create resources for teachers working in complex classrooms, school leaders responsible for people and culture, parents and carers guiding young people through adolescence, and readers seeking greater clarity, resilience and direction in their own lives.
At the heart of Retief Libris is a commitment to substance. Our work brings together evidence, professional experience and thoughtful writing, translating complex ideas into clear, accessible and practical guidance. We are interested not simply in informing readers, but in helping them think more clearly, respond more deliberately and make meaningful progress.
In a world crowded with information, quick fixes and competing advice, Retief Libris takes a different approach. We value depth without unnecessary complexity, practicality without oversimplification, and encouragement without empty promises. Our books and resources are designed to respect the intelligence of the people who use them while remaining useful in the realities of everyday classrooms, workplaces, families and lives.
Retief Libris Publishing exists to make worthwhile knowledge usable. To turn insight into understanding, understanding into action, and action into meaningful change.

Lucentism
Lucentism is a practical philosophy for living with greater clarity, composure and purpose.
It centres on seeing situations more accurately, responding deliberately rather than reactively, protecting what matters through healthy boundaries, and rebuilding with dignity after difficulty or change.
Rather than offering abstract ideals, Lucentism translates reflection into practice, providing a grounded framework for clearer thinking, steadier action and a more intentional life.

About Jacques
Jacques Retief is an Australian educator, author and artist, and the founder of Retief Libris Publishing.
His work brings together education, leadership, creativity and a longstanding interest in how people learn, adapt and rebuild through change.
-
Over a career spanning schools, adult education and higher education, Jacques has taught and led across a wide range of contexts. He currently leads The Arts in secondary education and has previously worked as a Head of Department, Curriculum Coordinator and Teaching and Learning Adviser, with professional experience across English, EAL/D, the Arts, curriculum development, industrial relations and educational leadership.
His postgraduate studies include a Master of Education in Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Inclusion and a Master of Arts in TESOL, alongside further study in management, training and workplace practice. This combination of classroom experience, leadership and interdisciplinary study informs a writing style that is evidence-informed, practical and grounded in the realities of everyday life.
Having lived and worked across Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East before settling in Australia, Jacques also brings a distinctly cross-cultural perspective to his work. His writing is attentive to context, complexity and the different ways people experience education, work, family, identity and change.
Through Retief Libris Publishing, he writes for teachers, leaders, parents and readers navigating demanding seasons of life. His books explore education, wellbeing, resilience, personal development and contemporary ideas, while Retief Libris Education produces practical resources designed for busy classrooms.
Across all of this work runs a consistent philosophy: take worthwhile ideas seriously, make them clear, and make them useful. The result is writing that combines professional experience, research and common sense.

What makes Retief Libris different
-
Retief Libris is shaped by the realities of classrooms, schools, leadership and professional life. Jacques Retief is a practising educator and school leader with experience across teaching, curriculum, TESOL, The Arts, professional learning and educational leadership. The result is work informed not only by research, but by what people actually face in demanding, imperfect, real-world settings.
-
Our books and resources serve teachers, leaders, parents and thoughtful readers, but they are connected by a consistent purpose: helping people see more clearly, respond more deliberately and move forward with confidence. Different audiences may arrive with different challenges, but the underlying promise remains the same.
-
Retief Libris occupies the space between professional practice and personal growth. We explore the systems people work within, but also the resilience, judgement, boundaries and self-understanding required to navigate them well. The work is neither narrowly academic nor conventional self-help; it is designed to connect sound thinking with useful action.
-
We believe readers deserve credible ideas without unnecessary jargon, inflated claims or manufactured urgency. Our approach is evidence-informed, practical and measured: serious enough to respect complexity, clear enough to be useful, and grounded enough to apply in everyday life.
-
Books, educational resources, articles, practical tools, free materials and professional learning are developed as parts of one coherent body of work. This allows readers to move naturally from an idea to a resource, from a book to a practical tool, or from professional learning to deeper reflection without having to leave the Retief Libris world.
-
Lucentism gives Retief Libris a broader intellectual foundation: a practical philosophy built around clarity, composure, reconstruction, boundaries and meaningful living. It provides a consistent way of thinking about challenge, change and human development, and gives the publishing house a point of view that deepens and evolves over time.
The difference is simple: thoughtful work, grounded in experience, made genuinely useful.
